British government has added 11 more destinations to its travel alert list concerning the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated beverages.

This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after several high-profile incidents including the deadly loss of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a poisonous chemical commonly employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to identify.

Government Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office official the minister emphasized that every traveler should recognize the signs of methanol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.

"If something feels off, like a headache that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The entire list of destinations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
