Significant Online Outage Impacts Dozens Online Platforms and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web disruption has disrupted many online platforms and applications worldwide, as users reporting issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at the web hosting system.

The affected platforms include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-owned platforms including its main retail website and the Ring device manufacturer.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were additional accounts of issues using the the tax authority site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users used social media to report their doorbells were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, notifications of disruptions on individual platforms totaled the thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the outage began in the east coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a division that provides essential online backbone for a host of companies, who utilize capacity on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive cloud computing system.

Just after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “higher error rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the United States. The cascading impact appeared to disrupt platforms around the world, with the problem monitoring service showing problems with the same sites in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on internet outages, further indicated a increase in problems on the start of the week, including several cases situated in the state of Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the outage began.
