Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Update Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The winter content update for Minecraft has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the development team had long felt it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we desired a new weapon that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," explained a senior product manager. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the intended purpose."

If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can joust against your companions on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a major applications for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she hints.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it should be made an Olympic sport right away.

Another significant inclusion in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is inspired by the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for fresh air.

The remaining new features are primarily things that seek your demise, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.

"We've been thinking about this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also bring in something for underwater," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked striking, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while riding a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
