‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Phototherapy is definitely experiencing a wave of attention. You can now buy glowing gadgets targeting issues like complexion problems and aging signs along with sore muscles and gum disease, the latest being an oral care tool outfitted with miniature red light sources, marketed by the company as “a significant discovery in personal mouth health.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, stimulating skin elasticity, relaxing muscles, relieving inflammation and chronic health conditions while protecting against dementia.

Understanding the Evidence

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” observes a neuroscience expert, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Certainly, we know light influences biological functions. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Artificial sun lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.

Various Phototherapy Approaches

Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In rigorous scientific studies, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, finding the right frequency is key. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Phototherapy, or light therapy utilizes intermediate light frequencies, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

The side-effects of UVB exposure, such as burning or tanning, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. Most importantly, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – different from beauty salons, where oversight might be limited, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Commercial Products and Research Limitations

Red and blue light sources, he notes, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen utilization and dermal rejuvenation, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “The evidence is there,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. We don’t know the duration, ideal distance from skin surface, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. There are lots of questions.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, however two decades past, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he says. “I remained doubtful. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, which most thought had no biological effect.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support

More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. These organelles generate cellular energy, producing fuel for biological processes. “All human cells contain mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” notes the researcher, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is generally advantageous.”

With 1070 treatment, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In low doses this substance, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”

All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: free radical neutralization, swelling control, and waste removal – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
