‘He has come back from the dead’: The comedy legend was in eight days in a medically induced coma during the pandemic.

The famed comedian suffered a “near fatal” heart failure that resulted in him being placed in an induced coma in 2021, per details from a new film about the comedy star.

Featured in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the legend of movies such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars twice, spent a total of five weeks in the medical facility.

“He wasn't right, and he was unable to describe to me what was wrong. So, we headed to the ER. His heart stops. During those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can’t pump as much blood out with each beat.”

Physicians subsequently induced him into a coma for eight days, before warning his child, his daughter: “We might not get him back. We are unsure how present he’ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.”

“After regaining consciousness, all he was able to do was use his vocal cords,” she stated further. “He has essentially come back from the dead.”

The actor personally has said that he has suffered recall difficulties since his hospital stay, and in the documentary he fails to recall some of his past on-set and backstage incidents, including a fight with fellow comedian Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live backstage area.

Chase said he was “upset” by his absence from the 50th anniversary special of SNL this year, at which he was in the audience but not featured.

“Well, it was kind of upsetting actually,” he said. “I haven't spoken about this until now. But I expected that I should have been on the stage too with all the other actors. When former castmates Garrett and Laraine were called up, I was curious as to why I didn’t. There was no invitation. Why was I excluded?”

Now 82, Chase, nearly lost his life in 1980 when he was shocked by electricity on the set of Modern Problems, an incident which precipitated a period of depression.
