🔗 Share this article Challenges Continue for Aid Distribution in Gaza's Urban Center In Spite Of Temporary Peace Although the access route at the Egyptian border becomes operational in the coming days, humanitarian organizations confront substantial obstacles distributing aid to Gaza City, the territory worst hit by food shortages, analysts state. Access Issues Primary highways are almost unusable due to massive destruction across the devastated territory – or are still controlled by Israeli forces. Any vehicle that breaks down is almost certainly immediately stripped. Zikim, the key gateway to the northern territories, devastated by multiple years of war, has been shut down for several weeks, and authorities have informed aid groups in Gaza that there are no short-term arrangements to activate the border point, as stated by relief personnel. Damage in Northern Gaza The main city was the target of a major Israeli offensive initiated in August that was ongoing when the peace agreement was agreed upon recently. Destruction in the northern region has been extensive, with entire towns including urban centers and adjacent communities in devastated as well as many of the surrounding regions of the main city. "Any operation of a border point into Gaza is beneficial, but we need to ensure we can access populations where they are," said an experienced official from an international NGO. Humanitarian Situation Witnesses said many of the approximately 300,000 people who have gone back to the northern region from the densely populated southern area where they had been sheltering during the Israeli offensive were now "camping" among the ruins of their homes, often without any shelter and with limited nutrition or hydration. An official from an international organization said the destruction in the northern territories was "devastating". "We see block after block, structure after structure ... there is urgent requirement for clean water. The situation is dire. We need all the crossings functioning," the representative, who was in Gaza City recently, added. Restricted Access An organization head based in the urban center said the requirements in what used to be the region's bustling commercial and cultural hub were "immense". "We see positive expectation and faith but there needs to be rapid progress on the border points. We haven't seen any significant change on the ground yet," the director stated. "There remains a small quantity of assistance [and] we are only starting to comprehend the extent of destruction. So many streets are completely covered in ruins ... there is scarcely a building that is safe. There remains harm and live explosives across the region." Ongoing Changes In recent days, relief groups said modest volumes of necessary propane entered Gaza for the first instance in seven months, along with consignments of grain products, rice and farm products. The additional resources sent prices in markets falling. Within a central community, a community member said there had been certain progress since the ceasefire. "The markets are stocked with supplies, produce, and fresh fruit, although the prices are remaining elevated and not affordable for the entire population," the resident commented. Colder Months Preparations "The primary requirements at present, especially with the approach of winter, are to have a tent to shelter us from the low temperatures and cold-weather clothing because the markets do not have sufficient clothing for us or, if they exist, they are scarce and extremely pricey." Multiple organization-assisted food preparation facilities in mid and southern regions have resumed functioning since the ceasefire. Assistance Transport Vehicles were announced to have entered the border access point through Israeli territory to Gaza during the week, though exact numbers were uncertain. Israel's news organization reported that recent humanitarian shipments would include nutritional supplies, healthcare equipment, petroleum products, fuel for cooking and materials to repair vital infrastructure. "Humanitarian aid remains flowing to the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing and alternative access points after Israeli security inspection," an government spokesperson commented. Allocation Problems But tracking the quantity of vehicles could be inaccurate, warned a professional from an international NGO. "We need to know what is in the vehicles and their capacity levels for it to be a really meaningful indicator," the expert said. Commercial operators are transporting convoys of trucks containing chocolate, fizzy drinks and light food, which have little nutritional value, while urgent medical support for children or others who have gone without proper sustenance for two years are limited. Medical Status In Gaza City, only a handful of healthcare facilities are functioning, compared with numerous in summer. Many agencies have substantial resources of humanitarian goods stockpiled in the region awaiting entry. A humanitarian body working with Palestinians across the territory for a long time has three months' worth of nutrition for the entire population in place to be transported. "We have the resources, the instruments and the capabilities ... we just need the permission," said a relief official, just returning from Gaza. Political Factors A proposed plan details that "complete" aid should reach Gaza and be provided through the UN and relief organizations, without obstruction from either armed factions or national security. This likely prohibits the debated authority-approved relief agency which commenced activities in earlier this year, causing chaotic scenes and hundreds of deaths as numerous individuals assembled around its distribution sites.
